Home Cooking Tips for Helping Your Dog Lose Weight

By Dog Child

|

At Dog Child, we believe in providing the best nutrition for your pup, especially when it comes to managing their weight. Home cooking for your dog can be a great way to control their calorie intake and ensure they are getting the nutrients they need. Here are some tips to help your dog lose weight healthily and effectively:

1. Choose Lean Proteins

Lean proteins like chicken breast, turkey, and fish are lower in fat but high in essential amino acids. These proteins help maintain muscle mass while promoting fat loss.

2. Incorporate Vegetables

Vegetables are low in calories and high in fiber, which can help your dog feel full without adding extra calories. They also provide essential vitamins and minerals. If you’re looking to meal prep quickly our Mixed Veggie Meal Mix can be a great option.

3. Monitor Portion Sizes & Use a Slow Feeder

Even healthy foods can contribute to weight gain if given in large quantities. It’s crucial to measure your dog’s food portions to ensure they are consuming the right amount of calories. Reference our feeding guide here or book a consultation with our nutritionist. We recommend reducing the amount of calories by 20% during this weight loss period for 2-3 weeks then assess how your dog is doing. If you’re continuing to feed the same food, reduce the portions by 20%.

Use a slow feeder to slow down your dog's eating.  This will result in them feeling more satisfied and full.  Another way to slow down feeding is to freeze their meals.

4. Switch to Home Cooking

Home cooking for dogs can significantly aid in weight loss. Just like when humans want to lose weight they are advised to eat fresh whole foods to aid in weight loss, the same applies to dogs. By using lean proteins, high-fiber vegetables, and optional whole grains, you can create balanced meals that promote feeling full and reduce calorie intake. Cooking helps avoid the hidden sugars, high carbs and unhealthy fats often found in commercial dog foods, ensuring a healthier diet that supports your dog's weight management goals.

5. Limit Carbohydrates

While carbohydrates are an important energy source, too many can contribute to weight gain. Focus on low-glycemic index carbs that provide sustained energy without spiking blood sugar levels. Opt for small portions of sweet potato or quinoa.

6. Include Fiber-Rich Foods

Why It’s Important:

Fiber can help with digestion and keep your dog feeling full longer. It can also aid in regulating blood sugar levels. Incorporate fiber-rich foods like pumpkin and green leafy vegetables. Make sure they are cooked appropriately for easy digestion.

7. Use Dog Child’s Essential Nutrients Mix

Why It’s Important:

Our Essential Nutrients Mix ensures your dog gets all the necessary vitamins and minerals when home cooking, even when on a calorie-restricted diet.

Add our Essential Nutrients Mix to your home-cooked meals to balance your dog’s diet and provide complete nutrition.

8. Avoid High-Fat Treats

Many commercial treats are high in fat and calories, which can set back weight loss goals. Opt for low-calorie, homemade treat options which can be as simple as fresh fruit and vegetables.

Offer treats like small pieces of carrot, apple slices (without seeds), or homemade low-calorie dog treats found here.

9. Maintain Regular Exercise

Exercise is crucial for weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight. It helps burn calories and keeps your dog active and happy. Ensure your dog gets regular exercise through daily walks, playtime, and interactive activities. Adjust the intensity and duration based on your dog’s fitness level and weight loss goals.

10. Stay Consistent

Consistency in feeding and exercise routines is key to successful long-term weight management. Regular monitoring of your dog's weight and body condition can help achieve and maintain your dog’s ideal weight.

Create a feeding and exercise schedule and stick to it. Monitor your dog’s progress and make necessary adjustments with the guidance of your vet or nutritionist.

11. Consult Your Veterinarian or Nutritionist

Every dog is unique, and their weight loss plan should be tailored to their specific needs. Your dog could also have an underlying health condition causing the weight gain.

Schedule regular check-ups and discuss your dog’s weight loss plan with your veterinarian. They can help you adjust portions and food types as needed.

Also, a nutritionist can help map out a weight loss plan for your dog’s specific needs. Feel free to book with an expert here.
